Beacons  Beacons  New!! the DDS Beacon

My Callsign is G6AVK, I am located in Rayleigh, Essex, England.
LOCATOR - JO01ho or if your old enough to remember, QRA - AL33B.

Some history...
I started as a listener way back in 1974 with a Crystal Set and after getting "hooked" I started to build all sorts of radios and staying up all hours! listening broadcast stations, using a variety of Receivers, such as the HAC single valve RX , R1155N and HRO-5, things have changed a little now but you can see and read about the Receivers I used to own below.

National Radio Co.  - HRO-5TA1

I stumbled onto the "Amateur Bands" and it went on from there, getting my license to transmit in December 1980.
I am a very keen "Home Brewer" and 75% of my gear was home made in the early days.

The radios I own and use now are the Icom IC202-S (muTek frontend board fitted), Kenwood TS-850SAT and the new addition of a Yaesu FT-847, an amazing little rig!
My main interests are QRSS/QRPp on LF/HF and on the higher Bands Sporadic E, MS, JT6M etc. (Antennas under construction)..
I am currently active with some of the "Digital" Modes mainly QRSS/ QRPp modes (LF) using the excellent program SpectrumLab on RX and of course HomeBrew TX, for the more "normal" Digi modes I use MixW2 by UT2UZ and UU9JDR

The NEW shack Indoor shack.. still work in progress :-)

The  Pictures below show the main Operating area, showing the TS850-SAT with a few Mods, and now fully filtered plus a SO-2 TCXO, the Icom IC202-S has a Mutek front end and was primarily used as an "IF". The new addition to the Shack is an FT-847, this has done away with my old transverters and keeps the TS850 free for HF use mainly, plus the FT-847 has give me the addition of 4m and 6m bands which I am finding most interesting indeed. I have fitted the FT847 with the 4m pre-amp kit and PWR Mods which make a remarkable difference!.

The picture on the right is showing the work/test area which seems always in a mess just lately :) due to lots of work on the Beacons..

The NEW Shack Test Bench
analyser, counter etc

This shows the Home Made Spectrum Analyser Unit (Top) design by G4PMK,  which feeds into the Tektronix-465B scope (Bottom). In the middle of this stack is a Racal-Dana 9918 Counter (GPS Locked). At the top is the GPS Locked 10Mhz/1Mhz source for the counter, DDS-MEPT (Beacon) etc.

Brief GPS Info:
This comprises of an Isotemp OCXO 134-10, a Rockwell Jupiter GPS receiver board and the  Logic Board (10Mhz PLL) by Joe Ruggieri, quite similar to an early design by G3RUH.
I have added a divider inside the GPS (Div 10) as the counter requires a 1Mhz ext Ref.

And finally... To the right of the Scope is the excellent WM-2QRP Wattmeter

My current project(s) are QRPp Beacons for 10Mhz (30m) and 7Mhz (40m) which are "work in progress" ;-)
